To Nurture

To Nurture is a performance piece exploring the art of nurturing my faith through physical/tangible representation.

My ritual included readings from the Psalms, in an act of prayerful meditation inspired by The Celebration of Discipline (Richard Foster).

I planted sunflower seeds with the intention of watering the seeds every time I engaged in this act of meditation. Just as prayer is nurturing to my faith, the water is nurturing to the seed.

I planted the seeds in small pots and chose three different locations to sit in and engage in my Bible time/ Spiritual Reflection ritual. The first spot I chose was a chair by a window in my bedroom, where I normally spend this time. This space allowed me to engage in a quieter, deeper reflection. The second location was a picnic table outside the back of our house where I was able to be closer to nature, and where I also had to ability to engage with neighbors and housemates. This space allowed me to explore how I connect to God through being outside, in a more immersed and less reflective state. The third pot was my traveling companion. I took this pot with me to school, to run errands, to go get coffee with a friend. When I felt like a conversation, or an interaction, or a moment was nurturing to my faith, I took a moment of prayerful reflection, whipped out my phone Bible,  and watered the plant.

By the end of the seven days, there were small sprouts in each of the pots.

Some reflections that I had while creating this piece...

  • I am not the creator of the flower, but the nurturer of the flower - God is the artist that created the flower

  • Location plays a huge role in headspace during meditation - I observed the various ways that God moves through silence, through observation, through reflection, through sounds, through conversations, through people

  • I noticed the way that others poured into my faith (I played with the idea of having friends water the seeds for me)

  • The seeds don't grow if I am not nurturing them!
